2018 award recipients for the In Her Footsteps Recognition Program

Vancouver, BC ProMOTION Plus announces the For Immediate Release_ ProMOTION Plus announces 2018 In Her Footsteps Honourees in British Columbia. These women are being recognized for their extraordinary contribution to providing opportunities for girls and women in physical activity and sport in BC.

Jennifer Fenton.

Her career has specialized in the development and delivery of highly successful British Columbia-based healthy school initiatives. She was instrumental in developing and delivering CAAWS’s On the Move initiative and has published research on girls’

experiences in physical education

Colleen Laferriere. A level 3 Certified Coach, Laferriere is the head coach for the Aldergrove Skating Club. She believes in a team coaching and club concept which creates an environment for all skaters to feel supported by everyone in their club. Creating a positive environment where kids can progress to their highest potential is of utmost importance to her.

Laferriere is starting her 40th season of teaching skating and is now teaching second generation of skaters in Aldergrove, teaching all disciplines including skills, dance, freeskate and synchronized skating teams.

She was awarded the Recreational Coach of the Year for the BC/YK Section as well as the National Award winner in 2005. In 2014 she won the Volunteer of the Year Award for the BC Coast Region. Most recently she was also awarded Volunteer Coach of the Year for the BC/YK Section.

In Her Footsteps is ProMOTION Plus’ signature recognition program. Honourees are publicly recognized at Sport BC’s Athlete of the Year Awards banquet which will be held on March 13, 2019 at the Fairmont Pacific Rim.

Jennifer Fenton has been a consultant in the physical activity and health

education field for thirty years.

She is the Past Chair for ProMOTION Plus- the BC Organization for Girls and Women in Physical

Activity and Sport, former CAAWS Board member and is the current Chair of the Active North

Shore Network. Fenton has a BA in Leisure Studies from UVic and a Masters from UBC examining

grade four girls’ experiences in physical education in a low-income multicultural city.

The In Her Footsteps program was transferred to Sport BC in 2018 to provide a larger, more integrated platform to recognize women in sport and physical activity in BC.

Fenton and Laferriere join an esteemed group of 60 women who have been honoured by ProMOTION Plus since 2007 for their passionate contribution to mentoring and supporting girls and women in physical activity and sport in BC.
